Platinum V’s White Gold Engagement Rings.

White Gold

White Gold is a mixture of metals, with saying that keep in mind that gold when mined is naturally yellow. White Gold is alloyed with white metals like zinc, palladium and sometimes platinum to turn it into a grey color which is then Rhodium plated to give it a mirror like white finish that you see in the stores.

White Gold Specs – 18ct white gold has a Moh Hardness of 2.5-3 White gold has the same properties as yellow gold – meaning that 18ct white gold is 75% gold mixed with 25% Alloy

Platinum

Platinum is heavier which makes it denser and more durable than other metals.  Platinum Jewellery is 95% pure and it is also hypoallergenic and does not need the constant maintenance of Rhodium Plating like white gold, as it is naturally white.  Platinum is not a very easy metal to work with and is totally unforgiving, so you need to be a real Master jeweler to know how to work with it. Therefore many Jewellers may steer you away from it to satisfy their manufacturing capabilities.

Platinum Specs – Platinum has a Moh Hardness of 4-4.5 Platinum is also purer than white gold.  Measured in parts per thousand, platinum jewelry is typically 850-999 parts pure platinum (85%-99.9%), with the remainder made up of Alloy (ruthenium). White gold isn’t as pure or durable. Platinum is denser, heavier and stronger than white gold. Platinum is about 60% more dense than Gold. Platinum is said to be 35 times rarer than gold also.

So with all that in mind I hope that this puts it in perspective of the differences between white gold and platinum.

For timeless elegance, choose a cushion cut diamond

The cushion cut diamond, as its name suggests is reminiscent of a small pillow in appearance. They are usually square to rectangular in shape, with softened corners and a “puffy” appearance. Cushion cut diamonds are far less about sparkle and bold statements and their softer sparkle, most prominent in lower lighting situations, is more suggestive of elegance and refinement. Most popular in the 1800’s through to the early 1900’s, most modern brides and grooms are not familiar with the cut and as such either immediately adore the unique appearance of cushion cut engagement rings or find it’s less intense appearance less appealing.

Cushion cut engagement rings and jewellery with cushion cut diamonds have, until recently been difficult to come by, with buyers often resorting to estate jewellers and antique specialists to find them. However, with more brides and grooms appreciating the appeal of timeless elegance, the cushion cut is slowly becoming a more popular choice and as such, diamond merchants and jewellers are sourcing them more readily.

When buying or selecting a cushion cut diamond be sure to place considerable emphasis on the clarity and colour of the stone as fewer facets mean that it is easier for a naked eye to pick up small flaws.

What makes emerald cut engagement rings special?

While brilliant cut diamonds and princess cut diamonds are modern favorites for brides to be, those looking for a unique and timeless ring are now opting for emerald cut engagement rings. Distinctive in shape, an emerald cut diamond is usually rectangular with cropped corners. Set amongst claws, the diamond doesn’t so much sparkle like a brilliant cut diamond as opposed to lending itself to more dramatic flashes of light. It is a combination of this dramatic and elegant appearance and the fact that it is a less “common” choice that makes emerald cut engagement rings so special.

When looking for an emerald cut diamond or emerald cut diamond ring, be sure to be discerning about the quality of the diamonds. Given the fact that the cut is so open, flaws and colour in the diamond are easily identified by the naked eye. Emerald cut diamonds can look stunning presented both as a solitaire as well as with accent stones and can be used in bold modern settings as well as classic, timeless settings. However you choose to set your emerald cut diamond, compared to many other modern day brides- you’ll be sure to be wearing a unique ring!

The rules to buying jewellery online

The internet is a marvellous place to find bargains but as with any online purchase it’s essential that you are an astute buyer when considering buying jewellery online. Costume jewellery is very safe to purchase online if you are buying through a reputable site with adequate security, as it is generally much cheaper than buying designer jewellery online and loose diamonds online.

For those purchases where a considerable investment is involved it is essential that you follow our key rules to buying jewellery online.

Buying Diamonds Online:

Buying diamonds online has become more and more popular as suppliers without retail chains have been able to join the online shopping trade and offer incredible prices on loose diamonds online- and smart consumers are saving thousands! Key considerations when buying diamonds online:

  • Is the company you are dealing with reputable and well established?
  • Are you buying internationally certified diamonds?
  • What guarantees are offered with your purchase?
  • Does the company offer contact details other than an email address? If so, call and speak to them to be sure they are reputable and reliable.
  • Does the company disclose where they source their diamonds from?
  • Will you receive the appropriate documentation and certificates to go with your diamonds?
  • Is the website offering a range of diamonds (indicating they specialise in them) or are they just selling one or one type of diamond? (suggesting it may be a scam)

If you ask yourself these questions and have any doubt at all about the validity and quality of your diamond purchases, we recommend you choose an alternative dealer.

Buying designer jewellery online:

Buying designer jewellery online and especially custom made jewellery online poses a real disappointment risk if you don’t do your research properly. Before investing in designer jewellery online or choosing a jeweller to make your custom made jewellery online ensure you have asked the following questions:

  • Has the jeweller made a piece such that you are asking them to make before- ask to see samples?
  • Will you be able to make progress check ups along the way as your jewellery is designed and made?
  • Are the jewellery designers you are working with master jewellers?

Put simply, in order to enjoy the savings to be had in buying jewellery online it’s essential that you do your research to ensure that you get what you pay for, deal with professionals and remain astute about internet security. Enjoy your shopping experience!

Men’s jewellery online

By choosing to shop for mens jewellery online you not only increase the diversity of choice but you can also take advantage of custom made designs and of course, are sure to save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars!

Popular men’s jewellery designs:

Because diamond earrings are a timeless piece of jewellery, it is hard to go wrong when considering specific styles. Yellow gold, white gold and platinum all make stunning settings for diamonds and these metals can be used in all earring styles- allowing you to compliment and enhance your other jewelry and attire.

Contemporary styles: For a more modern and edgy look you can’t go past princess cut diamond earrings, otherwise referred to as square diamond earrings. These can be made as a diamond drop earring or as bold diamond earring studs. When the princess cut is used simply and elegantly in 1 or 2 carat diamond stud earrings the effect is absolutely head turning!

Classic Styles: Pave diamond earrings, brilliant cut (round) diamond stud earrings in all sizes, and traditional diamond hoop earrings can be found in almost every woman’s jewellery box. These classic styles are truly timeless and elegant, making them a wise investment that can be passed down through the generations.

Mixed stone styles: Being a colorless yet brilliant stone, diamonds can be coupled with almost any other stone, gem or pearl to make a classic or contemporary pair of diamond earrings. Some popular combinations include- diamonds with pearls, diamonds with sapphires and diamonds with rubies.

However, a word of caution when buying diamond earrings online, from a retailer or from a jeweler- be sure to do your research and buy only from reputable sources such as Diamond Jewellery Studio.
