Polish influences how well light is able to enter and exit through a diamond and is very important to a diamond's brilliance. Diamonds that have a poor polish have less brilliance and scintillation because they have microscopic polish lines that blur the surface of the diamond. These polish lines reduce the amount of light that enters or exits a diamond.Laboratories assess polish by examining the facets using powerful microscopes. A common polish defect is surface graining.The most skilled diamond cutter can encounter variations in hardness or grain, the same as in timber, as they polish a facet.The result is a polish line or lines running accross a facet that can only be detected using a microscope.
