WHY ARE ARGYLE DIAMONDS PINK?

Coloured diamonds get their colours from different chemical impurities, for example, yellow diamonds contain nitrogen. However, it is a mystery how argyle diamonds get their pink hue. One theory is that the colour in pink diamonds is due to the way light is distributed throughout the gem, with a small pink grain magnified to make the entire diamond pink.

HOW RARE ARE ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS?

Pink diamonds are among the rarest of the fancy diamond colours. There are only three mines where pink diamonds are mined; in Brazil, Africa and Australia, and only about 1% of the diamonds found in the latter have a pink hue, making them very rare and sought after.

WHEN WERE PINK DIAMONDS DISCOVERED?

Although there were a few rare pink diamonds that were owned by collectors, it wasn’t until the late 1970s when the Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia was founded that Argyle pink diamonds started to be used in jewellery. Until then, it was difficult to find coordinating diamonds, so most pink diamonds were kept in vaults or displayed in museums.

WHY IS ARGYLE MINE CLOSING?

The Argyle Diamond Mine has been open since the late 1970s, so at this point, the mine has become so deep that extraction is becoming more and more difficult and costly. The mine is set to close in late 2020, which means now is an excellent time to buy Argyle pink diamonds, as the cost is likely to skyrocket.
